Arriving on Australian shores in 1956 with the Italian Olympic team, Giorgio Angele was only 23...

At the time he was the team's pastry chef, and the 'downunder' experience opened his eyes to another country, another culture, and a nation that was in need of another cuisine.

The dream of moving to the new country became a reality when he migrated here in 1956, and he hasn’t stopped baking since. He has worked in, and owned, cafes in Melbourne’s ‘Little Italy’ all his life, and his children grew up in this multi-cultural, culinary environment. When he started to slow down, Giorgio handed the reins of his cafe empire to his two sons, Fabio and Yuri. But that didn’t mean he actually stopped. In fact, you can still find him pottering in the kitchen at the Carlton cafe from time to time.

Giorgio’s sons have taken their father’s staunch legacy and run with it. The original cafe their father opened, and the passion for Italian coffee and cuisine was so popular, that they opened their second cafe in Melbourne’s City Square in 2005. This was followed by another in Camberwell in 2007, and then Myer Melbourne, in 2010. Their food and design concept has proven so popular, they have expanded overseas, and opened cafes in Singapore and Dubai.

The beauty of each Brunetti cafe is that they revel in the authentic ambience of 1940s Rome. They are designed with sophistication and ultimately, they replicate a traditional Italian cafe. Keeping it all in the family, the Brunetti cafes are all signed off by Giorgio’s other son, Joe, who is an architect.

All cafes offer a large selection of Brunetti fan-fare which includes celebration cakes and desserts, savoury treats, chocolates, and great coffee. The ingenious and successful formula the Angele boys have used in each café includes different ‘sections’, each specialising in their particular food or drink group.

For instance, at the bar you will find specially roasted and blended specialty coffee, alongside their famous Italian hot chocolate. The Pasticceria section offers a luscious array of cakes, tarts, mignon, chocolates, nougat and original delicious cakes for any celebration.

The Gelateria section boasts up to 16 flavours of gelati, all made daily on the premises by gelatieri using only fresh fruit and natural ingredients. This section also offers icy granitas, fresh smoothies and freshly squeezed juices, made to order.

The Paninoteca section offers an array of mixed savouries including tramezzini, focacce, salads, and Piadini. All in all, the Angele family has brought the best Italian cuisine to our shores, and made an absolute gastronomic meal of it. Their appreciative Australian, and now international, visitors are loving the whole show.
